Determined Steps: Eagles Scout battle

My Nephew became an Eagle Scout this past weekend. He’s been battling osteosarcoma ( for years and his ability to look beyond and above his battle is truly inspiring. His ethics and staunch ability to be positive in the face of unrelenting medical hardship is a testament to all who dwell on the insignificant, mundane and untrue.

Kyle Lawrence Anderson, Son of Kip and Deb Anderson, was
born January 22, 199 in Columbus, Nebraska. He is currently a junior at
Columbus High School. He is a member of the National Honor Society. He is involved in Golf, Quiz Bowl, CHS 101 and is a manager for the Basketball team. He is a member of Peace Lutheran Church and is actively involved in the Senior High Youth Group.
Kyle began his scouting career in 2005 as a Tiger Cub in Immanuel Lutheran’s Pack 192. He earned his Tiger Cub, Bobcat, Wolf, Bear and Webelos badges with Pack 192. Kyle earned the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest award in 2010.
Kyle crossed over to Boy Scouts in March 2010 to Troop 276 at Peace Lutheran Church. He advanced to the ranks of Tenderfoot in May 2010,
Second Class in November 2010, First Class in August 2011, and a Star in May 2012. He earned his Life Rank on May 13, 2013. Kyle completed 29 merit badges. On June 16, he passed his Eagle Scout Board of Review and earned his Rank of Eagle Scout. He earned his God and Church Award in January of 2011. He earned his World Conservation Award in June of 2013. He has held the positions of Quartermaster, Chaplain’s Aide, Troop Guide, Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader. He is currently the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. He is a member of both the Order of the Arrow and the Nani-Bha-Zhu tribe at Camp Cedars. Kyle has helped with many other Scouting projects, such as Scouting for Food, Holiday Coop, Flag Ceremonies and other Eagle Scout Projects.
He has been on many camp-outs, including several in below freezing temperatures. He has attended Camp Cedars every summer except tow, when he was hospitalized.
Kyle’s Eagle Scout Project was rebuilding the stage and renovating the Deer Run Campfire site at Camp Luther near Schuyler, Nebraska. His project was completed in October 2013. He planned the project, solicited materials and coordinated over 20 scout and youth volunteers on the project.
He accomplished most of the above after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) of his left thigh and knee in 2011. His left knee and left thigh have been replaced with a metal rod, and he has had to learn to walk again. Therefor, the name given to him by his Nani-Bha-Zhu tribe is Determined Steps.

Kyle is a 3rd Generation Eagle Scout. His
grandfather Lawrence McKinnis & Uncle Dan McKinnis are also proud Eagle
